Even though Pombal is located 30 kilometer from the coast, it does have a Municipal Beach called Praia Osso de Baleia. It is a calm beach with a small beach shack that only opens during summer season. Perfect for those looking for a relaxing day at the beach. Just a few kilometers south of Praia Osso de Baleia, you can find the beach town of Pedrogão. This town has has some restaurants and shops and is a perfect spot nearby for a diner or drink at the beach.
Figueira da Foz is the largest beach town in the area and has lively city centre with shops and restaurants. It also hosts one of the widest beaches of Europe, Praia da Buarcos. This wide sandy beach with sports area and playground is near some nice restaurants and one of the best ice cream bars in town. A bit more to the south you can find Praia do Cabedelo, a calm beach popular amongst surfers with a surf school and surf bar.
Just two or tree kilometers away from the coast lies lake Ervedeira, or Lagoa da Ervedeira in Portuguese.
It is a small like lake with sandy beaches and a perfect spot for swimming when the water at the beach is still cold (as it often is). Parking is free, but the restaurant has been shut down recently unfortunately.
Just a 40 minutes drive from Yuccasa, you can find one of the most beautiful spots in the area, Fragas de São Simão. It combines a beautiful lookout point (Miradouro) with a small Schist village (Casal de São Simão), a nice hiking area and 2 river beaches. The smallest one, at the lowest parking point, doesn't have any facilities and is a nice spot for kids to play in the water. The large one, more upstream, has a small restaurant and a lifeguard on duty during summer season. It is located in a Gorge and kids can drive from rocks.
